The Ripple CTO David Schwartz and the founder and CTO of Amsterdam-based crypto investment firm Cyber Capital, Justin Bons, have been in an ongoing debate regarding the decentralization of XRP. Bons alleged that XRP is a more centralized network due to its Unique Node List (UNL). According to him, this list consists of trusted validators responsible for transactions and maintaining the integrity of the XRP Ledger. He highlighted that nodes not on these UNLs are not trustworthy and do not participate in the consensus mechanism.

Schwartz challenged Bons’ definition of decentralization, arguing that a network could never be decentralized since there is no way to enforce people to accept its decentralization. He instead argued that XRPL rarely sees disagreement over which nodes to trust and that honest nodes only occasionally have to resolve a tie-breaking situation.

Additionally, Matt Hamilton, former Principal Developer Advocate at Ripple, argued that each node is responsible for choosing its own UNL, free of any influence or coercion. Furthermore, he maintained that there is no central authority in XRP and this is why XRP is more decentralized than Bitcoin and Ethereum.

It’s clear that the debate between the two entities will continue as both sides have firm convictions regarding the decentralization of XRP. While Bons is convinced that XRP is centralised, Ripple officials believe that XRP is more decentralized than Bitcoin and Ethereum due to the lack of central authority. Ultimately, it is still difficult to determine the outcome of this dispute, so it’s a good idea to stay informed and see how this discussion unfolds in the coming weeks.
