Creating a cryptocurrency from scratch is not as complex as it sounds. In a recent video, Johnny Shankman, also known as @whitelights.eth on Twitter, completed a speedrun on creating and deploying a new token, humorously named “EASY_MONEY” in 27 seconds. This record was beaten the next day, clocking in at 22.45 seconds. The term speedrun refers to completing a task as quickly as possible, which originated in the gaming community.

To accomplish this speedrun, Shankman utilized OpenZeppelin’s Contracts Wizard, a program that generates code for an ERC-20 token with a few clicks. Through this, users can select a variety of features for their token. After the code is created, Remix is used to compile the token’s smart contract and deploy it to a chosen blockchain network. Shankman chose the Ethereum testnet, stating in the comments the video was “for educational purposes only”.

The speedrun has since gone viral, with many large accounts reposting the video and gaining more than 3 million views across a series of different accounts. This record-breaking post comes in a time where “shitcoins” have gained drastically in popularity and becoming the driving force of the memecoin boom, largely due to the “useless” Pepe token.

Shankman has since followed with a comment saying someone had created a token with the same name as his explainer, but clarified he “did not make it” and he will “not be buying it”.

The latest memecoin speedrun has made creating a cryptocurrency in less than 23 seconds a very achievable reality. The process is not as difficult as it sounds, and with the right tools it can be done in a matter of seconds.
