XRPL developer Wietse Wind recently reported unusual traffic on XRPL's public infrastructure. This was evident from a chart shared by Wind that revealed a sudden peak since last Monday which indicated HTTP requests sending 100-1000 (or even more) requests per second. This contrasted with regular requests, which typically sent about 10 queries per minute. To counter the impact of this traffic surge, Wind implemented steps to detect, throttle and block some queries, though the result has yet to be fully stabilized. There is speculation that the traffic surge may have been caused by poorly programmed arbitrage and trading bots, and not a DDoS attack as questioned by a user. Wind therefore concluded that this problem affects public nodes and is not a network issue. This has led Wind to call out to XRPL power users and traders to practice responsibility when using the public XRPL infrastructure, by not sending thousands of calls per second or using multiple IPs. If further action is not taken, this irresponsible activity could have a massive negative effect on the long-term health of the public XRPL infrastructure.
