Cybersecurity company McAfee has reported that cybercriminals are increasingly using the names and images of popular US celebrities to lure consumers into online scams. The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) has enabled criminals to create deepfake videos that mimic the likeness of celebrities, making it difficult for consumers to distinguish between real and fake content. These deepfake videos are so convincing that consumers may click on fraudulent links, unknowingly downloading malware that steals personal and financial information. McAfee has released its "Celebrity Hacker Hotlist," which includes names such as Scarlett Johannson, Kylie Jenner, and Taylor Swift, as celebrities often exploited for online scams. The rankings were determined based on the number of risky sites and fake content generated when searching for a celebrity's name, as well as the risk scores given by McAfee's WebAdvisor browser extension. McAfee warns that these scams can result in devastating financial losses for fans and impact the public image and brand of celebrities.
