The Ethereum restaking protocol EigenLayer is investigating a security breach in which $5.87 million worth of tokens were stolen from an investor. The stolen tokens, $EIGEN, were quickly swapped for $USDC, and most of the stolen funds have been traced to the centralized exchange HitBTC, with a smaller portion sent to Kraken. The attack was traced to a compromised email thread, but EigenLayer assured users that the incident did not involve any vulnerabilities within its core protocol or token contracts. The platform has contacted relevant platforms and law enforcement agencies, and some of the stolen funds have been frozen as part of the investigation. EigenLayer's team is working to secure the remaining funds and will provide further updates to its community. Despite the breach, the attack does not impact the broader ecosystem or the security protocols of the platform. The hack occurred shortly after the unlocking of the EIGEN token, and its market value has dropped since the incident.
