Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller expressed skepticism regarding the need for a central bank digital currency (CBDC) in the US payment system during a recent speech. Waller questioned whether there is a problem that CBDCs could solve and emphasized the benefits of market-driven solutions and private sector competition in fostering payment system innovation. US lawmakers, including the House Financial Services Committee Chairman Patrick McHenry, have also opposed the establishment of a CBDC, citing concerns about privacy and financial freedom. Several states, such as Louisiana and North Carolina, have passed legislation to prevent the creation or implementation of a CBDC.
