The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM), led by Elon Musk, has sent emails to federal employees asking them to report their accomplishments from the previous week. The OPM plans to use artificial intelligence (AI) to assess the employees' responses. Musk posted on X stating that failure to respond to the email would be taken as a resignation. House Speaker Mike Johnson praised Musk's efforts, confirming the use of AI systems. However, there has been backlash from critics who argue that DOGE is overlooking data and privacy laws. The Justice Department clarified that ignoring the email would not result in automatic resignation. Musk has threatened termination for those who do not respond. President Donald Trump supported Musk's actions, viewing them as a way to determine if employees are actually working. Unions and groups criticized the mass layoffs ordered by OPM as unlawful. Some agencies instructed their employees to ignore the email. The Department of Agriculture stated that the response was voluntary. Various agencies, including the FBI and the Environmental Protection Agency, advised their employees on how to proceed with the email. The Health and Human Services Department warned that the information shared could be accessed by foreign actors. The Department of Transportation allowed employees to send their responses without classified information. Secretary Sean Duffy publicly shared his accomplishments on X.
