Texas Man Sues Attorney General Over DOJ’s Prosecution of Crypto Software Devs

Blockchain entrepreneur Michael Lewellen has filed a lawsuit against U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, seeking assurance that the Department of Justice (DOJ) will not prosecute his upcoming cryptocurrency project for violating money transmitting laws. The lawsuit argues that the DOJ's criminal prosecution of noncustodial cryptocurrency software developers is unconstitutional and violates the First and Fifth Amendments. The suit comes amid concerns about government persecution of crypto privacy software developers, with Lewellen aiming to protect his forthcoming project Pharos, a crypto-based crowdfunding platform. Lewellen's suit will be handed over to Garland's successor once he departs from the DOJ.
