Europe sees fastest growth in extremist crypto donations, Chainalysis warns
A recent report by blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis reveals that extremist groups worldwide are increasingly relying on cryptocurrency, with Europe experiencing a concerning rise in activity. While North America remains the largest source of extremist crypto donations, Europe's share has grown sharply since 2017, commanding nearly 50% of total inflows between 2022 and 2024. The surge is fueled by nationalist, anti-Semitic, and white supremacist groups, often linked to polarized political events. The average donation size remains relatively small, but donor intensity is increasing, especially in Europe. Privacy coins like Monero (XMR) are also being used to avoid scrutiny in regions with strict hate speech laws. This highlights the growing challenge in tackling extremist funding globally.
