ByteDance plans to pump $20bn capex mostly into AI as it defends its AI lead in China
Chinese tech giant ByteDance plans to invest $20 billion in AI infrastructure development by 2025, according to anonymous sources. The company aims to develop AI infrastructure such as data centers and networking equipment. ByteDance will target big tech firms including Huawei, Nvidia, and Cambricon Technologies with this capital expenditure. The funding will help ByteDance defend and consolidate its lead in AI in China, where competition among tech giants is increasing. ByteDance started AI applications in 2024 and now has over 15 standalone AI applications, surpassing rivals Tencent Holdings and Baidu. The investment will also support ByteDance's overseas AI offerings. President Donald Trump signed an executive order delaying a ban on ByteDance-owned app TikTok for 75 days.
