Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has suspended chip supplies to Xiamen Sophgo, an AI chipmaker affiliated with Bitmain, following an investigation launched by the U.S. Department of Commerce. The probe is examining potential sanctions violations relating to Huawei, which has been under restrictions since 2020. The investigation focuses on whether TSMC supplied chips to Huawei, and the similarities between TSMC-manufactured chips for Sophgo and Huawei's Ascend 910B chip have prompted scrutiny. This move is part of the U.S.'s efforts to tighten export controls over technology linked to China, potentially reshaping the country's semiconductor landscape and restricting Bitmain's access to advanced chip technologies.
