The Russian Energy Ministry has proposed imposing restrictions on crypto mining activities in certain regions that are facing energy shortages. These restrictions, which would go into effect in December, would ban mining in these regions during forecasted energy shortage periods. The Ministry justified the proposal by stating that developing other essential activities takes priority over crypto mining. The affected regions include Irkutsk, Buryatia, Trans-Baikal, Karachay-Circassian, Kabardino-Balkaria, North Ossetia-Alania, Ingushetia, Chechnya, Dagestan, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk People’s Republic, and Lugansk People’s Republic. The ban would be in place from December to March each year until at least 2031. This move is not surprising, as the Russian government has been highlighting the need for such restrictions due to power shortages.
