El Salvador's daily Bitcoin purchases have paused since February 17, following the country's $1.4 billion loan agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The nation currently holds over 6,000 Bitcoin, worth around $586 million. President Nayib Bukele had previously been purchasing one Bitcoin daily since November 2022. In March 2024, Bukele transferred the Bitcoin holdings to a cold wallet, marking the first public disclosure of the nation's Bitcoin wallet address. The IMF agreement requires El Salvador to modify its Bitcoin policies and is expected to attract further financial support. As part of the agreement, El Salvador will scale back its Bitcoin initiatives and make Bitcoin acceptance voluntary for private sector businesses. Despite the pause, the country has made additional Bitcoin purchases on several occasions, including adding $1 million worth of Bitcoin to its reserves in December 2024 and acquiring 11 BTC in a single day in February 2025.
