Several users of cryptocurrency exchange Binance have reported falling prey to an SMS spoofing attack. The phishing text appeared in Binance's official message thread, making it difficult to distinguish from legitimate communications. One user, Joe Zhou, shared his experience on LinkedIn, explaining that he received an SMS from the same Binance number he typically received verification codes from. The message claimed his account was being accessed from North Korea, leading him to panic and call the number provided. The person on the phone asked Zhou to set up a SafePal wallet and transfer his assets for an investigation. Zhou became suspicious, confirmed it was a scam with an acquaintance from Binance, and attempted to recover his funds but was unsuccessful. The attack occurred shortly after the Bybit incident, where $1.5 billion worth of ETH was lost. Phishing remains a significant threat to crypto users, with scammers evolving and using more sophisticated methods.
