The crypto world has experienced numerous hacks and scams, resulting in over $10 billion in funds being stolen in the past five years. Six out of the last 11 years have seen losses of over $1 billion to hacks and exploits. The largest crypto hack of all time occurred in February 2025 when more than 400,000 Ethereum, valued at $1.4 billion, was stolen from Bybit exchange. The attack was linked to North Korea's Lazarus Group. Poly Network and Binance Coin (BNB) also fell victim to major hacks, losing $611 million and $570 million worth of assets respectively. Japanese exchange Coincheck experienced a $530 million heist in 2018. Ronin Network was hacked for $552 million in March 2022, attributed to the Lazarus Group. Recovery efforts have been made in some cases, but the crypto community continues to face security challenges.
