A British man lost access to roughly 8,000 bitcoins in 2013 when his girlfriend accidentally threw away his hard disk. After years of legal battles to retrieve the disk from a waste dump, the case concluded without success in January 2025. Another case involves a programmer who lost access to 7,002 bitcoins stored on a USB hardware wallet after forgetting the password. A Bitcoin critic, Peter Schiff, also reported that his wallet password became invalid. Lastly, a writer bought 7.4 bitcoins in 2016 but lost access to them when he forgot the PIN code and the cleaning service threw away the paper containing the seed phrase.
