Global crypto adoption grew by 13% through 2024: report
In 2024, global crypto adoption increased by 13%, with Bitcoin and Ethereum seeing significant growth. The number of crypto asset owners rose from 583 million in January 2024 to 659 million by December 2024. Bitcoin ownership expanded by 13.1%, reaching 337 million owners, while Ethereum grew by 13.6% with 142 million owners. The report also mentioned the potential increase in exposure to Bitcoin through the introduction of U.S. spot exchange-traded funds. Institutional interest and pro-crypto policies introduced by President Donald Trump were cited as driving factors for Bitcoin adoption, while Ethereum's growth was attributed to the Dencun upgrade and the launch of spot Ethereum ETFs. The study also highlighted that crypto adoption outpaced mobile phone and internet adoption, with younger generations being more open to Bitcoin compared to older generations. In terms of country adoption, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, the United States, and Vietnam were the top five countries leading in crypto adoption, with Kenya experiencing significant growth.
