During the final call of 2024 for Ethereum All-Core Devs (ACD), key updates were provided regarding plans to raise the gas limit and progress towards the Pectra upgrade. Ethereum developers are preparing for a gas limit increase to 36 million gas, but technical constraints may limit higher thresholds. The Mekong testnet has already increased the gas limit to 36 million for network performance testing. Increasing the mainnet gas limit beyond 40 million may face challenges due to gossip-layer constraints. Validators can signal their support for a gas limit increase without waiting for a hard fork. The Pectra upgrade, scheduled for Q1 2025, will involve replacing EIP-7742 with EIP-7840 to improve scalability and support layer-2 rollups. Other updates include EIP-2537 for gas repricing and the launch of an EVM resource pricing working group in January. Further testing is required for EIP-4444, which schedules the rollout of pre-Merge history expiry. There is a need for clearer validator node requirements and a proposal to redefine "Meta" EIPs. Overall, Ethereum remains committed to iterative improvement and stability in its development.
