A security breach in August 2021 to February 2023 resulted in exposure of some MetaMask users' information. According to Consensys, approximately 7,000 individuals were affected. The blockchain software firm claimed that MetaMask's browser extension and mobile app users were not affected. Fraudsters were able to gain access to the data through a third party service provider that MetaMask used to create customer support tickets.

The affected data mainly includes limited personal information needed to identify customers for support. However, due to the chat function, users may have shared additional information that was accessed. After noticing the unauthorized access, Consensys has taken action to stop it from continuing.

At the same time, concern for user safety stays high. There is risk that the affected users may face future phishing scams. Consensys warned the public to remain vigilant for any suspicious activity. The situation underlines the need for extra precaution taking when it comes to cryptocurrencies. Cryptocurrency related phishing attempts and schemes have been on the rise in the past few years. Data from Kaspersky Lab recorded a 40% year-over-year increase in such attacks in 2022.

Consensys has reported the issue to the Data Protection Commission of Ireland and the Information Commissioner’s Office in the United Kingdom. While the data breach happened outside of its control, Consensys urges users to stay aware of the risks associated with data security. They remind users to be suspicious of activities and communications received, and to not follow any links or reply to any messages if they feel so.
