Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and Twitter, has recently threatened Microsoft with a lawsuit over its AI (Artificial Intelligence) training using Twitter data. Musk claims that Microsoft has trained its AI illegally, bypassing Twitter's regulations. In response, Microsoft announced that it will cease its support to Twitter on April 25, across its online social advertising platforms.

Musk further suggested that Microsoft is demonetizing Twitter data by removing advertisements and selling this data to other firms. The software giant's decision to stop its Twitter support has left its customers without access to their Twitter accounts through its tools, creating, managing, viewing and scheduling tweets. Microsoft doesn't provide any explanation as to why it decided to remove Twitter support although industry experts suggest that the reason may be because of Twitter's API fees jumping from $0 to $42,000 per month.

Moreover, Microsoft's decision has affected academic work heavily. As a result of being priced out, over 17,500 academic papers have been based on Twitter data since 2020. Microsoft has yet to comment on Musk's accusations, but reports suggest that the company is developing its own AI chips to power in-house and OpenAI projects, likely in response to the rising costs. Microsoft is the second-highest valued company in the world based on its market cap of 2.15 trillion USD.
