A novel Ethereum (ETH) proposal was disclosed in May 2022, which is set to bring about a new type of cryptocurrency tokens with unique functionalities – small DApp decentralized applications. The ERC-5169 proposal presents the scriptURI() function, helping to locate executable scripts that are attached to tokens. This concept makes it possible for issuers to couple a code logic with the cryptocurrency they create to provide enhanced functionalities, and hence enable web3 users to access these scripts with the scriptURI function. Such applications can be stored either on decentralized systems such as IPFS, GitHub, or even in regular cloud storage. The usage of tokens with scripts and URIs can be likened to that of “smart keys”. Much like an office door that only opens for employees with a special token, these tokens can carry instructions (script) so that people immediately understand how to access the linked logic. Though this concept presents an exciting opportunity, there are security issues that could occur. All participants must take steps to guarantee that the issuer alone controls the script linked to the token, which can be done by keeping the script in a 'permanent' storage or safeguarding it via multi-signature mechanisms.

Much is yet to be seen with ERC-5169 but it certainly suggests that tokens on Ethereum (ETH) are about to embark on a deeper level of usage and relevance. From automated security instructions to mini applications, this proposal is set to introduce a whole new jurisdiction of cryptocurrency use.
