Helium’s tech provided emergency cell service during Hurricane Helene
During the aftermath of Hurricane Helene in North Carolina, Nova Labs and Helium collaborated to create a wireless hotspot using Helium's technology. The goal was to provide cell connectivity to areas in North Carolina where more than 20% of cell sites were affected by the storm. They obtained Starlink terminals, and with the combination of Starlink and Helium's technology, they created "Helium hotspot beacons" that acted as miniature off-grid cell phone towers. These beacons were deployed in North Carolina and received over 20,000 unique connections from locals. The decentralized infrastructure provided by Helium's hotspots makes them a more cost-effective and flexible solution compared to traditional mini cell towers deployed by legacy carriers. Helium has also offered hotspot beacon kits to authorities in southern California.
