In 2025, Ethereum's Layer 2 (L2) ecosystem is expected to achieve cross-network interoperability and solve liquidity issues through the introduction of ERC-7683, a new cross-chain standard. The implementation of this standard will greatly improve the user experience on Ethereum's L2s, making them more attractive to developers. ERC-7683 will make L2s interoperable, allowing users to move NFTs and swap tokens across different chains. It will also enable the creation of "filler networks" that standardize cross-chain transactions and streamline governance across multiple chains. This unified framework will simplify the complexities of cross-chain interactions and pave the way for specialized functions on different chains. ERC-7683 was introduced by Mark Toda, Matt Rice, and Nick Pai in November 2024.
