In response to the growing threat of fraud and deception enabled by artificial intelligence (AI), four United States senators have requested information from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on its efforts to track AI attacks on elder citizens. The lawmakers asked the FTC Chair four questions about the data collection practices, capacity to identify AI-powered scams, and potential to identify generative AI scams that go undetected. The senators also requested a breakdown of the FTC's Consumer Sentinel data to identify the popularity and success rates of each type of scam, as well as if AI is being used to process the data. This news follows Singapore's National AI Strategy 2.0, which seeks to build up 15,000 AI experts, and an international joint effort to develop guidelines for secure AI system development. Such guidelines recommend that companies maintain control over their AI model's infrastructure, monitor for tampering, and train staff on cybersecurity risks.
