In a heartbreaking case, Robert Wolfe, a retired postal worker from Indiana, had $11,000 stolen from his country's bank account despite taking prompt action and alerting the bank when a slicker scammer attempted to extract the money from his account. Despite his fast action, JPMorgan denied his claim as money had already been taken. JPMorgan stated that it is heartbreaking when criminals can trick customers into sending money or sharing their account information and to be aware if someone contacts them asking for passwords, account information or one-time passcodes, as banks will never call you to ask for this type of information. However, if the fraudsters had used the payments platform Zelle, customers may be reimbursed as the 2,100 financial firms who use Zelle have taken action to reimburse affected customers. The moral of the story is to remain vigilant and to never share confidential information with unknown individuals.
