US Authorities Are Releasing Seized Bitcoin Mining Hardware: Reuters

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency has conducted seizures of cryptocurrency mining equipment at ports across the country, following requests from the Federal Communications Commission to uphold existing regulations. These actions are part of broader concerns about Chinese technology in sensitive sectors, as trade tensions between the U.S. and China continue to escalate. The seizures align with guidelines from the U.S. Department of Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security, which aim to prevent the diversion of "advanced semiconductors" used in AI and crypto to advance Chinese interests. Initially targeting models from Bitmain, seizures have since expanded to include hardware from manufacturers MicroBT and Canaan. Some equipment may have been detained due to the presence of AI chips from Sophgo, a Chinese company under trade restrictions. These seizures have created operational challenges for U.S.-based miners who rely on regular equipment upgrades to stay competitive.
