Scroll announces OpenVM, a new zkVM

Scroll, Axiom, developer Max Gillet, and the Ethereum Foundation’s Privacy & Scaling Explorations (PSE) team have announced OpenVM, an open-source zkVM framework for instant proving. OpenVM will be adopted by Scroll L2 as its zkVM and plans to validate mainnet blocks in the coming months. This transition will make Scroll a Type-1 zkEVM, the most fully Ethereum-equivalent type. Scroll's upgrade to a Stage-1 rollup with a fully functioning proof system will follow soon. OpenVM's modular architecture will allow Scroll to introduce features without changing the underlying circuit and benefit from zkVM improvements without modifying application code. The zkVM market is already quite crowded, with many different zkVMs available. Proof volumes on Ethereum mainnet have seen a drop due to batched proof generation and more efficient proof verification, which has reduced costs. Prover networks like Risc Zero's "Boundless" and Fermah have helped lower zk-proving costs. According to Electric Capital's developer report, there are 2,054 monthly active developers working in zk, and zk contract deployments have grown significantly in the last four years.
