Japanese man sentenced to 3 years after creating crypto ransomware with AI

A 25-year-old Japanese man, Ryuki Hayashi, has been sentenced to three years in prison for creating ransomware using generative AI. Hayashi created code capable of encrypting data and issuing crypto ransoms by bypassing AI safety parameters. He admitted to wanting to make money through ransomware and impersonating others to purchase SIM cards. This conviction for abusing generative AI is reportedly the first of its kind in Japan. While Hayashi's prison sentence has been suspended for four years due to his remorse and confession, he will go to prison if he commits another crime during this period. It is important to note that the ransomware code he created was never used.
