Australians considered “easy prey” for crypto scam call centers

A former call center worker in Ukraine revealed that Australians were the primary targets of crypto scam calls due to their perceived vulnerability. The worker stated that Australians were targeted because they were believed to have good money and a good salary. Americans were not targeted due to the belief that the American government would crack down on such scams. The call center worker also mentioned that they targeted Australia, New Zealand, and countries in Asia in the morning before moving on to Europe in the afternoon. Private investigator Ken Gamble explained that the fear of the FBI had made most call centers worldwide avoid targeting Americans. However, there was no such fear in Australia, as the Australian Federal Police had never pursued these scammers. The perception of Australians being easy prey has made it difficult to combat the spread of scams. In 2023, there were around 8,600 reports of scams in Australia, resulting in a loss of $206 million. The Australian Federal Police is working to disrupt these criminal organizations through various initiatives, but it is still facing challenges in handling the high volume of fraud.
