Nayib Bukele, the President of El Salvador from June 2019 to December 2021, has resigned to campaign for re-election in 2024. He was succeeded by Acting President Claudia Rodríguez de Guevara, and the next election is scheduled to take place in February 2024. During his time in office, Bukele was known for reducing the country's high homicide rate as well as pushing for the adoption of Bitcoin as legal tender and creating a 'Bitcoin City' in El Salvador. Critics of Bukele have cited mass detentions of civilians and human rights violations in the country's attempts to tackle gang activity. The Salvadoran Supreme Court ruled that a president may serve two consecutive terms and no mandatory wait period exists.
