Even though the Bitcoin market is currently down and a new record low in the number of Bitcoin ATMs is being set around the world, Australia has managed to climb into the top three countries for installations of cryptocurrency ATMs. At the beginning of January, Australia was ranked fourth; however, since then, they have added an additional 16 machines.

According to Coinatmradar data, Australia now has the third most crypto ATMs in the world, with 234 after passing Spain in the last three weeks, which had 222. The US and Canada remain in the top spots.

Australia deployed 99 crypto ATMs in the last three months of 2022, accounting for nearly half of their total number. Since the start of 2023, Australia has put in 16 more machines, however, contrary to this, Spain has drastically decreased by 4, and El Salvador, the fifth most populated nation, has not seen a single new machine.

Altogether, Australia, Spain, and El Salvador combined do not come close to the number of crypto ATMs in the U.S. There are 33,387, which makes up 86.9% of the world's total. When adding in Canada's 2,556, the U.S. and Canada make up 94.4% of all crypto ATMs.

The global market for crypto ATMs experienced a dramatic decrease in installations during 2022 due to a year-long bear market, rising geopolitical tensions, and global inflation. In comparison to the 4,169 ATMs installed in the first half of the year, only 94 new ATMs were added to the network from July to the end of 2022.

In January 2023, Coolangatta, an Australian city, welcomed its first Bitcoin ATM with integrated Lightning Network features. This ATM works in a similar way to regular crypto ATMs, but it is much faster due to its layer-2 Lightning solution. It also allows customers to purchase very small amounts of Bitcoin.
