US, Japan, and South Korea warn web3 firms about hiring IT workers from North Korea

The United States, Japan, and South Korea have issued a joint statement warning the blockchain industry about cyberattacks from North Korean hackers. These attacks pose a growing threat to the global financial system, with groups like the Lazarus Group targeting exchanges and investors to steal cryptocurrency. The governments emphasized the use of social engineering tactics by North Korean hackers and urged web3 companies to review past advisories to prevent accidentally hiring hackers from North Korea. The statement also encouraged private-public cooperation through initiatives like the Crypto-ISAC in the U.S. and similar efforts in Japan and South Korea. Several high-profile thefts have already been linked to North Korea, including a $308 million hack on a Japanese crypto exchange and a $50 million attack on a South Korean trading platform. Research has also revealed that North Korean hackers have been posing as remote workers for large companies, stealing millions of dollars by impersonating IT workers and recruiters.
