US and South Korea defense pact extends to cyberwarfare, outer space

South Korea and the US have announced that their mutual defense treaty, which was signed in 1953, will now apply to threats made in outer space and cyberspace. The decision comes amid growing concerns about cyberattacks from North Korea and potential aid from Russia. Future cyber threats to either country will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis to determine if they trigger the defense pact. The US has accused a North Korean hacking group of using crypto ransom payments to fund infrastructure for cyberattacks on US Air Force bases and South Korean entities.
