Republicans join bill to protect workers after DOGE firings

A new bipartisan bill called the Protect Our Probationary Employees Act has been introduced to assist federal workers who were dismissed by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) led by Elon Musk. The bill, sponsored by Democratic Representative Sarah Elfreth, has now gained support from Republican lawmakers. If passed, the bill would allow recently fired probationary employees to retain their seniority if they are rehired by the federal government. The legislation is also supported by various Democratic Representatives and liberal Senators are reportedly planning to introduce a companion bill. Elon Musk has distanced himself from the firings and stated that he is not responsible for them. Another legislative effort called the Model Employee Reinstatement for Ill-advised Termination (MERIT) Act was introduced earlier to reinstate federal workers who lost jobs under Musk's directive. The bill currently has 66 co-sponsors and the support of six major labor unions. Both bills aim to reverse the mass firings and protect the jobs of federal workers.
