Vitalik Buterin, the cofounder of Ethereum, has proposed new ideas to improve the network's data availability (DA) bandwidth enhancements. He believes that Ethereum's current upgrade process is too slow and that developers need a roadmap for the platform's scalability in order to make long-term plans. While many believe that Ethereum's layer-1 is unable to scale and that layer-2 solutions are the only option, Buterin disagrees. He suggests that Ethereum can significantly expand its base layer using zkEVMs and Data Availability Sampling (DAS), allowing for 100-1,000 times growth in a few years. Buterin recommends increasing the target bandwidth to one megabyte per second in a year or two, with ongoing improvements thereafter. This will strengthen Ethereum's ecosystem and benefit rollups, which rely on Ethereum for security. Buterin emphasizes the need for rapid growth in order to stay relevant and suggests incorporating Data Availability Provider nodes with stricter specifications to enhance scalability without sacrificing security. By pursuing quicker updates and more aggressive scaling goals, Ethereum can maintain its position as a leading blockchain technology.
