In this news article, Liam Heeger, a former core engineer for Firedancer, a Solana client developed by Jump, has announced that he left Jump to create his own layer-1 blockchain called Unto. Shortly after, Jump sued Heeger for violating a non-compete agreement by working on a new high-performance blockchain. However, the case was settled in February. Unto aims to improve on Solana's performance by an order of magnitude and plans to design the blockchain thoroughly before beginning the coding process to avoid any forced pivots. The startup has already raised $2.5 million in seed funding and plans to raise more in the future. Unto's new virtual machine will differ from traditional proof-of-work or proof-of-stake consensus mechanisms and will incentivize operators based on network performance rather than solely on stake.
