A group of unions has filed a lawsuit against the US Treasury Department to prevent Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (D.O.G.E) from accessing sensitive financial and personal information. The unions argue that the Treasury unlawfully allowed Elon's team access to confidential data, violating federal privacy protections. The unions are demanding that any data already collected be retrieved and secured. The lawsuit suggests that the sudden departure of David Lebryk, Treasury's acting Deputy Secretary, supports their claims. Treasury officials defend the decision, stating that Elon's team only has "read-only" access to coded data and that payments have not been blocked or delayed. Democrats in Congress and Treasury Secretary Bessent also face criticism for allowing Elon's involvement, especially due to his statements suggesting that D.O.G.E could block payments to organizations he dislikes. Treasury Secretary Bessent maintains that Elon's team has a standard role in reviewing payment systems, similar to external auditors.
