Messaging app Telegram has handed over the details of over 2,000 users to US authorities in 2024, according to data released by the platform. In the first nine months of the year, 14 requests were fulfilled affecting 108 users, but in the remainder of 2024, 900 requests affecting 2,253 users were complied with. The increase in data requests followed CEO Pavel Durov's arrest in August, after the company initially resisted cooperating with a child abuse investigation. Telegram updated its privacy policy to clarify it would provide data to authorities in response to valid legal orders. The app has long been used by criminal networks in Southeast Asia for activities such as money laundering and trading hacked data.
