A recent study conducted by the University of Georgia (UGA) has revealed that social media users are more likely to invest in cryptocurrency. The research found that engagement on platforms such as YouTube, Reddit, and X increases the likelihood of investing in digital currencies. Approximately half of social media users surveyed had invested in crypto, compared to only 10% of non-social media users. The study also discovered that individuals who engaged with multiple platforms were more likely to invest in crypto. YouTube, Reddit, X, and Clubhouse were found to have the highest investment rates, while Instagram users showed less interest in cryptocurrency. The researchers attributed this to the fact that the first three platforms facilitate discussions about crypto through videos and text-based threads, whereas Instagram is more visually oriented. The study also revealed that investment patterns were influenced by demographics, with men and individuals with a higher risk tolerance being more likely to invest in crypto. However, those with higher education levels were less inclined to invest. The findings also emphasized the need for media literacy education to help users distinguish between credible investment advice and misleading information.
