The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has set a deadline of 2025 to standardize zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs) as part of its Privacy-Enhancing Cryptography initiative. NIST has opened a "Threshold Call" for researchers to submit proposals for advanced cryptographic techniques to establish standards for ZKPs. The goal is to ensure consistency, security, and usability across applications and prevent fragmentation as adoption of ZKPs increases. Formal standards for ZKPs could bring trust and interoperability to fields like blockchain, finance, and identity verification. The standardization efforts aim to establish ZKPs as the backbone of a more private, secure, and interoperable digital future.
