Bitcoin, the first and largest cryptocurrency, officially launched 16 years ago on Jan. 3, 2009. The Genesis Block, mined by Satoshi Nakamoto, rewarded 50 BTC that can never be spent and included a message referring to a headline in The Times. Bitcoin's launch date is seen as its birthday by many. Since then, Bitcoin has grown to become a global phenomenon and has inspired thousands of cryptocurrencies and blockchain projects. The crypto market has rallied at the start of the year, with Bitcoin reaching highs of $108,268 on Dec. 17. However, there has been some selling pressure due to uncertainty about the Federal Reserve's interest rate decreases.
