Sberbank, TBank, and Tochka Bank have joined the digital ruble pilot program in Russia, bringing the total number of participating banks to 15. The program initially included 12 banks, with plans to onboard an additional 14-15 banks by 2025. A total of 22 banks have signed agreements with the central bank to prepare their systems for the project. The digital ruble, which is the third form of Russian national currency, started its pilot phase with real digital rubles in August 2023 and has expanded testing to 9,000 participants. Starting July 2025, major banks in Russia will be required to support digital ruble functionality, with fines imposed on banks that fail to comply. The central bank aims to make the digital ruble widely accessible for citizens and businesses.
