A former chief investigator in Russia has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for accepting a bitcoin bribe worth $65 million from a hacking group. Marat Tambiyev, who was working for the Investigative Committee of Russia, was accused of accepting the bribe from the Infraud Organization hacking group. The deal involved Tambiyev agreeing not to confiscate the group's illegally obtained bitcoin. However, in 2023, Russian authorities discovered the bitcoin on a computer and concluded that Tambiyev's job could not have accounted for such a large sum. Tambiyev denies the charges and plans to appeal the sentencing.
