Ripple CTO David Schwartz clarified that the XRP Ledger (XRPL) does not currently support native smart contract functionality, as it was initially designed for speed, efficiency, and low-cost transactions rather than complex programmability. However, Ripple is actively exploring ways to enhance the ledger's functionality, including the introduction of native smart contracts on the mainnet and the development of the XRPL EVM Sidechain. The aim is to introduce advanced programmability, including smart contracts, to the XRPL developer ecosystem in 2025. Existing smart contract standards, such as Hooks from XRPL Labs, will serve as a foundation for enhancing mainnet capabilities.
