Ripple CTO David Schwartz participated in a discussion on Twitter about the concept of blockchain immutability, specifically in relation to lost transactions on the XRP Ledger and missing blocks on the Ethereum blockchain. The discussion was prompted by a user's question about immutability, which caught the attention of the XRP community and Schwartz himself. Immutability is seen as a key characteristic of a blockchain, meaning that once something is created, it cannot be changed. XRPScan, a popular blockchain explorer, explained that while immutable data cannot be changed, it can be destroyed. Schwartz clarified that if a cryptographically-secure hash of data is given, the data is immutable, but that doesn't mean anyone knows what the data actually is. He pointed out that there are early XRPL transactions that are immutable but known. The XRP Ledger, developed by Schwartz and others, has continued to function despite the loss of some early ledger history.
