Researchers at the University of Illinois have reportedly used OpenAI's voice API to create AI-powered phone scam agents that have the ability to drain victims' crypto wallets and bank accounts. The researchers used OpenAI's GPT-4o model along with other tools to build the agent capable of autonomously executing various phone-based scams. Phone scams targeting Americans cost around $40 billion annually, and the researchers found that the average cost of a successful scam is just $0.75. The team experimented with crypto transfers, gift card scams, and theft of user credentials, achieving an overall success rate of 36%. OpenAI's detection systems detected the researchers' experiments and issued a warning against repurposing or distributing the output from its services to harm others.
