The DeFi scene on Ethereum has seen the emergence of liquid restaking tokens (LRTs), which aim to maximize investor yields. Platforms like Kelp DAO, Ether.Fi, Swell, and Puffer Finance are locked in a battle to become the protocol of choice for adventurous DeFi investors. The trend arose from EigenLayer's restaking platform, which allows blockchain protocols to inherit Ethereum's security by enabling staked ETH deposits to be reused or "restaked". Investors can also deposit funds indirectly through third-party liquid restaking protocols, maintaining liquidity and trading with LRTs. EigenLayer also offers rewards in the form of "points", which may entitle holders to token airdrops in the future. Liquid restaking protocols offer additional incentives, such as splitting tokens or providing leverage for trading opportunities. However, there are concerns about the speculative nature of liquid restaking and the potential failure of EigenLayer's AVSs and points system. Despite the risks, proponents believe that liquid restaking has the potential to support new blockchain networks and dApps with greater security, enhancing liquidity and capital efficiency in the DeFi ecosystem.
