The Ethereum ecosystem has seen significant progress in addressing scalability challenges through the implementation of Layer-2 (L2) solutions and technological advancements. However, this success has led to fragmentation, with over 50 L2s currently in existence. This fragmentation poses a threat to the overall user experience and liquidity within the Ethereum network. As a solution, the proposed ERC-7683 standard aims to simplify cross-chain operations, allowing users to seamlessly interact with the entire Ethereum ecosystem as if it were a single chain. The standard has gained support from over 50 protocols, including major projects like Arbitrum, Base, and Optimism. ERC-7683 has already been implemented in production through the Across platform, demonstrating its feasibility. By addressing fragmentation, the standard aims to accelerate mainstream adoption of Ethereum and create a unified and accessible ecosystem.
