Bitcoin Core developers have issued a warning about a software bug that affects one in every six Bitcoin nodes. The bug, found in software prior to Bitcoin Core version 24.0.1, can be exploited to overwhelm bandwidth or storage on the device, causing a denial-of-service attack. The bug has little financial benefit for attackers, but could be used by a wealthy or powerful actor to disrupt Bitcoin operations for non-financial reasons. The developers have been transparent in disclosing and patching bugs, and node operators are urged to update their software to avoid the risk of attack.
