ENS Labs, the company behind the Ethereum Name Service (ENS), has chosen Linea's technology to build its upcoming layer-2 network called Namechain. Linea is a zero-knowledge rollup built by Consensys, and it is currently the seventh-largest rollup network with $1 billion locked in its ecosystem. ENS Labs selected Linea due to values alignment and its speed, as zero-knowledge rollups offer faster and more cost-effective transactions compared to optimistic rollups. ENS is described as the "phone book for Web3" or the domain name service (DNS) of the web. The use of Linea's technology will allow for fast finality and the ability to update ENS names quickly. This move comes as other major crypto projects also announce their plans to roll out layer-2 networks, some of which have chosen Optimism's OP Stack. ENS will be one of the first projects to build a layer-2 blockchain using Linea's technology. The Linea team plans to issue a Linea token, although there are no concrete plans yet for its use within the Namechain ecosystem. Both ENS and Linea aim to strengthen and decentralize the L2 protocol by having multiple organizations contribute to Linea's development.
